Acrobat retains an edge on unusual edge cases — exotic colour profiles, complex transparency groups and certain prepress constructs — because it has decades of specialised handling built in. For everyday compression the difference is rarely visible.

The one-click Reduce File Size command applies a conservative fixed profile. Acrobat's real power is the PDF Optimizer dialog, where you control downsampling thresholds per image type. Our presets expose that same trade-off far more simply, and Target Size mode automates the search entirely.

Progress tracks pages completed, not time elapsed, and pages differ enormously in cost. A page holding one large photograph takes far longer than ten pages of plain text, so the bar appears to stall. It is still working — the Web Worker keeps the interface responsive throughout.

Yes. Bookmarks, the table of contents, internal cross-references, hyperlink annotations and interactive form fields all survive compression. Only the encoding of images and content streams is altered — the document's structural and navigational layers are preserved.

Compression is one-way, but your original file is never modified — it stays exactly where it was on your device. The compressed version is written as a separate download, so you always retain the source and can simply try again with a gentler preset.

Page dimensions, margins and layout are always preserved exactly. Print appearance only changes if images are downsampled below your printer's resolution. Less Compression holds images near 200 DPI, which prints cleanly on any office printer; avoid Extreme mode for anything going to paper.

Less Compression favours quality with images near 200 DPI. Recommended is the balanced default at roughly 144 DPI. Extreme maximises size reduction at about 96 DPI. Target Size ignores presets entirely and searches for the best quality that fits your specified limit.

You can compress them, but be aware that any modification to a PDF invalidates its cryptographic signature — this is true of every compression tool, not just ours. If the signature must remain valid, do not compress the signed document.

Your PDF was probably already optimized — for instance exported by Acrobat with compression enabled, or generated as pure text with subset fonts. When we cannot beat the original we deliberately return your untouched file rather than a worse one.
